Propane appliances are still quite popular in many homes and businesses around the world. And it’s not hard to see why, as propane is a cost-effective, reliable, and versatile source of energy for various tasks like cooking, heating, drying, etc.

It can keep your home warm and power your appliances, all while reducing your carbon footprint and helping you save on monthly bills. But this is only possible if your propane appliances are kept well-maintained.

Here are six propane tank maintenance tips to ensure your safety and keep your appliances running smoothly.

Call for Delivery as Soon as Possible

If your propane runs out completely multiple times, it can slowly cause damage to the tank and propane appliances. Knowing when to contact for delivery will ensure you get a supply without interruption in service.

Generally, it’s recommended to do this when your tank gauge gets to a reading between 20% and 30%.

    Schedule Annual Maintenance

Even if you consider yourself a handyman, you should always get these appliances serviced by qualified professionals. They’ll be able to service, repair, and maintain your tank and appliances to industry standards.

Proper maintenance not only extends the life of your appliances but also guarantees that they work efficiently and save you money. Schedule annual maintenance to keep them in top condition.

    Prepare for Cold Weather

Using propane to power your appliances in the winter can be a lot different than using it in warm weather. This is because when winter comes around, the cold weather can reduce the pressure of propane in its tank and make it evaporate.

You should invest in a heater blanket to keep the tank warm or use a heated gas delivery system to transport the propane to your appliances.

    Place the Appliances Properly

Propane appliances require a large enough space for breathing room to work in their best condition, so ideally you shouldn’t keep any clutter close to them and avoid placing them near a wall.

Always place propane appliances away from each other and try not to place other electrical devices near them. Additionally, you should check the manufacturer’s guide to find recommendations for how to position them for maximum safety and efficiency.

    Clean the Appliances Regularly

Throughout the years, propane appliances, like every other appliance in your house, can collect dirt and debris inside them. This is especially true for gas cooking appliances like a barbecue or grill, which can accumulate food scraps over time.

Making an effort to clean your appliances after use may help you save on costly maintenance or repair work in the future. Cleaning them will also ensure they work smoothly and efficiently every time.

Check for Leaks in the System

Propane is a very flammable gas, which is why it can be highly dangerous if there’s a leak. It is essential to inspect your appliances on a regular basis for leakage.

If you smell hints of propane or hear a hissing sound near your appliances, contact a professional immediately. For added safety, it’s best to install propane gas detectors in your home.
